Giving with Intention: Strategic Giving

Most people don’t suddenly decide to be generous — they are generous already.
But the donors who feel the most confident and fulfilled about their giving over time usually have one thing in common:
They have a strategic giving plan.
Giving with intention doesn’t mean committing to large amounts or complex strategies. It simply means deciding:
- Why you give
- How much feels comfortable
- How you want your impact to show up over the year
And let’s not lose sight of this: a strategic financial giving plan can also create meaningful tax efficiencies for donors.
A decided-upon amount, given consistently and thoughtfully, often creates more impact — and less stress — than last-minute or reactive giving.
When your own financial plan is clear and aligned with your goals, you gain the confidence to implement a giving strategy you can execute year after year.
Simple Ways to Start a Strategic Gift Plan
- Be clear on an annual or monthly amount that fits comfortably within your budget
- Ensure your causes align with your values or personal experiences
- Keep all donation receipts in one folder (digital or physical) for tax time
- Consult a financial professional to ensure you’re giving in the most tax-efficient way — this simple step can often allow you to give more
- Remember: generosity should feel meaningful, not overwhelming
Three Tangible Ways to Elevate Your Impact (Without Giving More)
1. Move from one-time gifts to monthly giving. Monthly donors are incredibly valuable to charities because they create predictable cash flow. For you, it smooths your budget and builds impact effortlessly over time.
2. Consider giving appreciated securities instead of cash. If you have non-registered investments that have grown in value, donating them directly can eliminate capital gains tax while still generating a full charitable receipt. This can significantly increase your after-tax impact.
3. Let charities know your intention. If you’re planning a larger gift, multi-year support, or even a future estate gift, tell them. This allows organizations to plan programming, staffing, and services with greater confidence — and often deepens your relationship with the cause.
When donors plan ahead, charities can plan ahead too — allowing programs, services and support to be delivered more reliably throughout the year.
Strategic giving isn’t about pressure. It’s about clarity.
And clarity is what transforms generosity into lasting impact.
